Scratches that appeared on Autumn’s shoulder after a disturbing spirit box session, which was held in doorway of Room 666.

They looked at one another and mouthed the words incredulously. What were they dealing with here—some kind of ghostly pervert?

“Who do you want to spank?” Sean insisted. There was no response at first, but when the question was repeated, a mellifluous voice (which sounded quite feminine) came back with: Robbin.

Sean actually sounded disappointed with that answer, and asked the entity whether it would rather spank Richard. The answer was an unequivocal NO.

“This isn’t a great night for me,” Richard whispered under his breath. “Not only am I apparently now an a-hole, but I’m apparently not even remotely spankable either.”

Despite the atmosphere of both excitement and tension that resulted from this interaction with unseen voices, Sean now had a mischievous glint in his eye. “You want to spank Richard, don’t you?” he smirked, not really expecting an answer to the flippant question. After a five-second delay, a male voice answered calmly: Not so much.

The sun was just coming up when the team decided to call it a night. Heading back to his hotel room, Richard was just about to flop down on the bed and grab some much-needed sleep when a ping from his phone indicated an incoming text message. It was from Jennifer.

“This just turned up on Autumn’s back,” the text read. Beneath that single line was a picture of Autumn’s right shoulder. Three long, angry scratches had appeared there, upraised welts that looked a lot like claw marks from some kind of animal. Jen had first noticed them when her daughter had taken off her jacket before showering.

“Do they hurt, honey?” Jen had asked, worried for her daughter’s safety.

“No, Mom,” Autumn shook her head. “I can’t feel anything.”

“No itchiness? Burning?” As a seasoned paramedic, Jen took off her mom hat and fell straight into her professional mode of thinking. Autumn shook her head again, repeating that the marks were completely painless.

Staring at the image of Autumn’s shoulder on his phone, Richard was every bit as shocked as Jennifer and Autumn were. Despite the early hour, he decided to consult with his go-to priest, a professional cellist and ordained Catholic named Stephen Weidner. Stephen was a seasoned paranormal investigator himself, and had even brought his own team to the Asylum in the past: they had left with some truly impressive results, and were eager to return. In fact, Stephen would have been physically present with the Boulder-based team tonight had professional commitments not prevented it.

“Look at the bifurcated ends,” Stephen answered immediately, remarkable considering it was almost dawn. The priest was very much a night owl. “I don’t want to worry you, but the way they split like that. It usually means that they’re the work of something dark—possibly even demonic . . .”
